amazon-logo-10As a novelist, I love a list. The only reason I mention being a novelist is because it sounds nice with the next bit. Lists are great. Their perfectly ordered rows of facts can’t be questioned. I even find shopping lists interesting. So, a list about something that’s actually interesting is even better. Books.

We all love books and we all love lists, so here’s the bestselling books according to Amazon US for 2013.

  1. Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath (Self-Help)
  2. Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg (Self-Help)
  3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney (Kids)
  4. Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims by Rush Limbaugh (Kids)
  5. Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in his Presence by Sarah Young (Religious)
  6. Inferno by Dan Brown (Fiction)
  7. The House of Hades by Rick Riordan (Fiction)
  8. Things That Matter by Charles Krauthammer (Autobiography)
  9. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Fiction)
  10. Killing Jesus by Martin Dugard (Religious)

Here’s the Top 10 on Amazon UK:

  1. The Fast Diet by Dr Michael Mosley (Food)
  2. Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography by Alex Ferguson (Autobiography)
  3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney (Kids)
  4. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (Fiction)
  5. Demon Dentist by David Walliams (Kids)
  6. The Hairy Dieters: How to Love Food and Lose Weight by Hairy Bikers (Food)
  7. Inferno by Dan Brown (Fiction)
  8. Minecraft: The Official Annual 2014 (Kids)
  9. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (Fiction)
  10. Tom Kerridge’s Proper Pub Food by Tom Kerridge (Food)

These two lists show up some interesting observations between the two countries so I thought I’d go deeper.

US Categories

  • Fiction – 3 (7)
  • Self-Help – 2 (1)
  • Religious – 2
  • Kids – 2 (1)
  • Autobiography – 1 (1)

UK Categories

  • Food – 3 (2)
  • Fiction – 3 (6)
  • Kids – 3 (1)
  • Autobiography – 1

I also wondered how typical this was, so in brackets by category are 2012’s numbers, and found that there was much more fiction around last year. This was bumped up by the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon in both countries.

Taking all of that into account, the big picture observation seems to be that the UK is obsessed with Food (especially dieting) whereas Americans are obsessed with God and Self-Help to save their souls. I’ll leave you all to make your own conclusions.

Until next time…
